The Cartier Santos holds a place in history that no other wristwatch can claim: it is the first modern wristwatch, created in 1904 for the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed a timepiece he could read while flying without taking his hands from the controls. Louis Cartier's solution — a watch worn on the wrist — quite literally changed how the world keeps time.
The contemporary Santos de Cartier retains the square case with exposed screws, the elegant proportions, and the interchangeable bracelet-and-strap system that has made it a wardrobe staple for over a century.
